Professional attitude towards protection of personal data

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic stated today that the Ministry safeguards electronic and hardcopies of personal data, protecting citizens’ privacy in a professional manner and adhering to constitutional and legal provisions.

Speaking at a gathering marking the European Data Protection Day and 30 years since the adoption of the Convention on the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, Dacic said that special attention is being paid to the training of Ministry employees tasked with handling this data.

Dacic noted that the Ministry of the Interior guards the majority of data on citizens, because of the nature of the tasks it performs, adding that the data is used with great care and only for prescribed purposes.

He reiterated that this data is being introduced in a central registry, a task which may be completed by mid-May.

Citizens will then be able to get acquainted with all records about them, Dacic announced voicing his pleasure at the fact that the Ministry has established good cooperation with independent regulation bodies which will prevent any abuse of personal data.

Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection Rodoljub Sabic said that the harmonisation of Serbia’s legal order with EU standards on the protection of personal data and serious work on the implementation of European standards are the obligations of the state.

He voiced his pleasure that representatives of the office he is heading are supervising the Ministry of the Interior in terms of the way it registers and handles citizens’ personal data.

Apart from representatives from NGOs, Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert also attended the gathering, along with representatives from state institutions which deal with personal data on citizens.
