Dacic said that the spot near Cukur fountain is of historic importance for the Serbian police because it is there that it clashed with the Turkish army for the first time in 1862, which is why 26 May is observed as the day of the Serbian police.
We have laid this wreath symbolically in order to express the remembrance to all members of the police. This is a difficult job and police members gave huge sacrifices for its country and people, Dacic stated and added that during World War I a half of members of the Gendarmerie lost their lives in the battles against the enemy.
The wreath-laying ceremony was attended among others by Police Director Milorad Veljovic, Head of the Sector for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of the Interior Predrag Maric and other ministry officials.
