The contract, whose total value is €24.3 million, was signed by general managers of these companies Goran Ciric and Milovan Markovic.
Matic said at a press conference held after the signing of the contract that the special importance of the construction of fiber optic cables is in the fact that two large public systems have recognised the importance of IT technologies.
In her opinion, the realisation of this project will provide more reliable services that will increase the competitiveness of the whole economy and the quality of life of citizens.
The Minister explained that the telecommunications network will be of high quality, great length and capacity, which will influence the liberalisation of the market of the Internet wholesale, as well as the price and quality of service.
Ciric said that the project should be completed in three years and that the entire funds needed for its implementation will be provided by PTT from its own sources, while Zeleznice Srbije will participate in the project with its infrastructure and land.
Profit from the subsequent lease of the infrastructure will be shared in half, he said, adding that he expects many telecom operators, investors, and government institutions to show interest in the lease.
The project will be carried on rail corridors in the length of about 2,000 kilometres, he said.
The first phase worth €5.3 million will involve building 444 kilometres of optical fibre on the Belgrade-Nis, Belgrade-Sid and Belgrade junction and will be completed later this year.
Ciric said the second phase, worth €4.9 million includes the construction of telecommunications infrastructure on rails Stara Pazova-Subotica, Nis-Dimitrovgrad and Nis-Presevo, while the third phase will cost €14.1 million and will include the construction of optical networks between Belgrade and Vrbnica and other routes.
Markovic said that this project opens up the possibility of better video-surveillance and solving a very important issue of property of Serbian railways.
