Following a meeting with French Minister for European Affairs Laurent Wauquiez, Djelic told the Tanjug news agency that the French Minister voiced his support for the beginning of talks on EU accession, provided that all the necessary conditions are met.
Just as Minister Wauquiez said, EU is no longer in the time when decisions were made regardless of concrete achievements in reforms. We also presented the need for the EU’s financial assistance to countries in the accession process to be better distributed in the years ahead, Djelic added.
He said that there is no reason to wait for Serbia to join the EU and then to increase its financial assistance, but explained that this should be done gradually while Serbia is on EU path.
Djelic underlined that during his visit to Paris he also met with representatives from the French Ministry for Foreign Trade to discuss the conditions for a strategic partnership between Serbia and France on the project to construct Belgrade underground railway.
France has set aside €3 million for a feasibility study. We expect the French to secure conditions to become our strategic partner on an infrastructure project which is of paramount importance for Belgrade, as well as the whole of Serbia, Djelic added.
He concluded that the goal of this visit to France was also to prepare for the visit of President Boris Tadic this spring.
