Grants to winners of “Women in Science” national programme

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic presented grants of €5,000 each to winners of a “Women in Science” national programme, molecular biologist Ljubica Harhaji-Trajkovic and mathematician Dragana Cvetkovic-Ilic.

Djelic said that these stipends have been presented in Serbia for the first time this year, adding that the programme was initiated by L’Oreal Balkan and the National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technological Development.

He stressed that 45% of scientists in Serbia are women, which is one of the top percentages not only in Europe, but in the whole world, adding that this outstanding presence of women in science improves the quality of the scientific community in Serbia.

The Deputy Prime Minister underlined that the budget for science in 2011 will be increased by 22% and that with the loans that are currently being negotiated, the allocations for science will amount to RSD 20 billion.

General Manager of L’Oreal Balkan Brigitte Streller said that the programme has been implemented for 12 years in 40 states, and that 500 young female scientists have received grants.

Over 140 young female scientists, currently attending doctorate or post-doctorate studies in Serbia, applied for the programme, which is the largest number of applications of highly-qualified candidates in Europe, she added.
