Speaking at a “Healthy Woman: New Vision and a National Action Plan” conference, Milosavljevic underlined that care for women’s health is important for every society, recalling that over 50,000 breast cancer screenings have been carried out in Serbia this year alone.
Infant mortality in Serbia has decreased over the last several years, as well as the mortality of pregnant women and women during delivery, the Minister said reiterating the importance of early disease detection.
The number of patients with malignant tumours will triple over the next 20 years, he observed, noting that only the number of patients with stomach cancer has been declining.
Director of the Commission for Gender Equality at the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy Natalija Micunovic recalled that a national action plan for implementing a strategy on women’s health has been adopted.
Micunovic noted that special attention was paid to disabled women or those who are being discriminated against, and repeated that the goal of all these measures is to improve the reproductive health of women, increase their participation in sport activities and similar.
Serbian Parliament Deputy Speaker Gordana Comic observed that women are dedicated to their families, children and work, which is why they see their doctors infrequently and usually turn up for check ups when it is too late for treatment.
Comic added that good standards on women’s health must be established in order to reduce the number of those who die from cancer and other diseases.
Representative from the Institute of Oncology and Radiology Ana Jovicevic warned that the number of patients with cancer in Serbia is constantly on the rise and that the disease is usually discovered in a later stage of development.
USAID Director in Serbia Susan Fritz said that women in Serbia are faced with many health challenges, recalling that the United States has made huge progress in terms of prevention.
