Destruction of excess armament to bring greater security

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said that by destroying excess weapons the Ministry of the Interior is contributing to increasing the security of all citizens and meeting the obligations under the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects.
Dacic, who attended the implementation of the project of weapon destruction that is being carried out in association with the South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC) at the centre for recycling in Zeleznik, said that a large amount of so-called small arms cause instability in society.
He said that has so far more than 40,000 weapons of all calibres have been destroyed, and added that a group that illegally transferred weapons from Bosnia-Herzegovina to Serbia and from our country into the EU has been arrested.
The police will soon destroy a larger quantity of drugs once the environmental issues are resolved, said the Minister.
The Interior Ministry today destroyed 28,285 pieces of illegal weapons, mostly handguns and rifles, which were owned by the Ministry of the Interior on the basis of executive judgments in various criminal activities.
