Serbia, France to strengthen cooperation in science, technology

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said late yesterday that the strengthening of ties between Serbia and France in the field of science and technology is of great importance.
In his speech at the lecture "Serbian and French view of the European Research Area", Djelic affirmed that France is a very important partner to Serbia and that its investment in Serbia, as well as foreign trade between the two countries may be greater than to date.
Serbia's goal is to become an important partner to France in science and technology, he underlined and voiced his hope that within 18 months a joint laboratory of the French National Centre for Research and the relevant Serbian institution will be built.
The Deputy Prime Minister pointed to the fact that 450 Serbian students are studying in France at the moment and that 12 scientific projects are being realised on the basis of the agreement signed with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Djelic proclaimed he expects increased cooperation between Serbia and France, especially in telecommunications and agriculture, adding that the two countries already cooperate successfully in many areas.
He outlined that the Strategy of scientific and technological development of Serbia envisages seven priority areas and that €400 million will be set aside for scientific and technological infrastructure.
French Ambassador for Science, Technology and Innovation Catherine Brechignac highlighted that there are many researchers from Serbia who are working around the world and that their mother country should establish a special collaboration with them.
She presented the fact that the number of researchers in the world has increased from 5.8 million to 7.1 million, and that in the field of industrial science alone the number of researchers has increased by 55 percent.
She specified that the EU budget for science for 2010 is €133 billion, but that investment from the private sector is much more important for its development, as well as the existence of private-public partnership in this area.
