Government determined to suppress all forms of discrimination

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that the Serbian government is determined to combat all forms of discrimination and ensure respect for human and minority rights in the region.

Opening an "Anti-discrimination in Serbia: overview and perspectives" conference, Dacic specified that in the last six years the number of inter-ethnic incidents in Serbia has been significantly reduced, which means that there are sporadic cases for which individuals are responsible.
From January to October this year there were 173 inter-ethnic and religious incidents, while in the same period last year the number of such incidents was 220, he outlined.
He observed that in central Serbia, the number of such incidents declined by 15.2%, while in Vojvodina it decreased by 25.8%, adding that last year the number of international and inter-religious incidents was 60% percent lower than in 2004.
The First Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that this is the result of increased preventive work of the Interior Ministry, and coordinated action with the relevant government authorities and cooperation with local governments.
Speaking on the activities of police fighting against discrimination, Dacic stressed that the police thoroughly investigate incidents between members of different communities, and added that special attention is paid to the protection of the Roma.
The strategic aspect of the Interior Ministry, he added, is that the makeup of employees corresponds to the structure of the population in Serbia, especially at a local level and in ethnically mixed areas.
