Serbia affirms its important role in fight against organised crime

Belgrade/ Lyon, 16 November 2010

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic confirmed today that four persons have been arrested in the territory of Serbia out of 12 sought by the Italian prosecution for drug trafficking.

Dacic, who is on a visit to Lyon, specified that in a joint operation of the Serbian Ministry of the Interior, the Serbian Security and Intelligence Agency, the Prosecutor’s Office for Organised Crime, the Gendarmerie and the Service for the Fight Against Organised Crime, a total of 12 locations were inspected.

Other persons that are sought are suspected to be in the territory of Serbia, the Minister said and added that according to data obtained from Interpol Belgrade, two persons from this list were arrested in Montenegro. He observed that this operation affirms the high level of capability of Serbian state organs in terms of law implementation, and points out the significant place which Serbia occupies in the international struggle against organised crime.

The operation against drug smuggling was carried out in several European states based on the information gathered by the Serbian security system, he clarified.

The Ministry of the Interior will continue searching for all persons wanted by the Italian prosecution, while Serbian state organs will send any information on their location they gather to the relevant Interpol bureaus, Dacic emphasised.
