European Commission commends Serbia’s progress in science, intellectual property

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic congratulated the scientific and technological community on the positive assessment of the European Commission regarding Serbia’s progress in science and intellectual property.
The Deputy Prime Minister’s cabinet stated that the European Commission’s annual report on the progress of Western Balkan countries remarks that Serbia has made huge progress in the domain of science and intellectual property.
The report especially emphasised the adoption of a national strategy and a new legal framework in science, as well as the participation of Serbian scientists in the projects of the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) for research.
As for intellectual property, the Commission commended the adoption of the law and the ratification of international conventions within the transitional trade agreement.
Progress has also been made in the implementation of laws through specialised police, customs and tax units, the statement adds.
However, the European Commission noted that budget investment in science, as well as investment from the private sector, is still rather low (below 0.5% of GDP).
