CEFTA agreement to help achieve regional stability

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic said today that CEFTA member states agreed at a meeting of the Joint Committee to work on the creation of a joint investment market in order to improve the image of the region and attract investors.

Dinkic stated at a press conference held at the Palace of Serbia after the CEFTA Joint Committee meeting that the meeting focused on preparation for trade liberalisation for certain agricultural products as of 2011.
At the meeting, Serbia proposed to establish cooperation between export promotion agencies, Dinkic explained and added that the first step has already been made by setting up the Internet portal that presents benefits of investing in the region.
He stressed that CEFTA is important for regional stability and preparation of the regional countries for entering the EU, pointing out that all countries in the region must be competitive.
Serbia also offered to CEFTA member states a chance to cooperate on Fiat’s project, which will secure Serbia exports worth €2.3 billion in 2013.
Serbia currently exports 32% of its goods to CEFTA countries and this year it had a trade surplus of around €1.3 billion, declared the Deputy Prime Minister, noting that Serbia, as well as other CEFTA countries, can achieve much greater trade exchange.
He disapproved of the fact that the current trade is dominated by agricultural products, raw materials and intermediate goods, which are all goods of low value. He added that this is a problem for all countries, not only in exports to CEFTA, but generally in foreign trade.
With the arrival of Fiat and Panasonic, Serbia wants to move to the production of material goods of higher value. This will be easier if a common investment market is created, Dinkic underlined and explained that the essence is to achieve greater regional stability through the CEFTA agreement.
The fourth annual meeting of the CEFTA Joint Committee has today closed CEFTA Week, which brought together businessmen, government officials and many local and foreign experts in Belgrade this week.
The meetings held during last three days were devoted to the study of real progress in the implementation of the free trade agreement, whose signatories are Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Albania, Moldova and UNMIK on behalf of Kosovo-Metohija.
