Bruno Maiser and Tomica Milosavljevic
Milosavljevic told a press conference that during today’s meeting with Eurotransplant President Bruno Meiser the two of them are to exchange letters of intent, specifying in which month of 2011 this agreement will be signed.
From that moment, children, patients in need of urgent transplantation of heart or liver, hyper-immunised cases for kidney transplantation and dialysis patients would be included in the waiting list, bearing in mind that Eurotransplant’s main role is a central distribution of organs, the Minister explained.
Over the next six months Serbia will prepare for the meeting of the Eurotransplant board in Belgrade and the signing of this agreement.
This would be followed by intense work in the next 12 months in order to achieve the level of eight to ten donations per one million citizens, which is necessary for permanent membership in Eurotransplant.
Milosavljevic recalled that there are currently about 2,000 patients in Serbia awaiting transplantation of liver, kidney, heart and other organs, and pointed out that the membership of our country in the Eurotransplant would significantly reduce the number of patients on waiting lists.
Eurotransplant has successfully operated for more than 40 years in the area with approximately 130 million people, providing patients from member states with more rapid and greater availability of organs for transplantation.
The cooperation is based on the principle of solidarity and trust, and has legitimacy and support in legislation in member countries.
