Vincent Degert and Tomica Milosavljevic
Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic told a press conference that the project is estimated at €1.5 million and is part of the EU’s constant efforts to endorse the development of Serbia’s health sector.
He said that a survey conducted among young people showed that 15% of first-year students in secondary schools have used some of the psychoactive substances.
A more intensive pre-emptive reaction is crucial, Milosavljevic stressed, adding that all social categories of population should be engaged in the fight against drug abuse to create a critical mass that may bring about a change in people’s stances.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of drug abuse, with a special emphasis on high risk groups, ie young people between 16 and 24 years of age.
Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert noted that drug abuse is a worldwide problem, stressing that activities on the prevention of drug abuse should be carried out simultaneously with measures to suppress the offer of drugs in the streets and their illegal trade.
Degert recalled that the EU has so far invested around €5 million in projects aimed at suppressing drug abuse in Serbia, underlining that it will keep securing funds for future activities in this sector.
Over the next six weeks TV channels will broadcast videos directed at parents and young people, and a campaign presentation may be viewed at
www.upd.rs.
Campaign slogans will be put up on the streets of all major towns and 200,000 brochures for parents and 100,000 leaflets for young people will be distributed.
