Government goal is EU candidate status in December 2011

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic stated that it is the government’s goal that Serbia should acquire EU candidate status in December 2011 and begin official membership talks in spring 2012.
Appearing on Studio B television last night, Djelic underlined that one of the advantages that goes with EU membership is the fact that the EU protects its members’ national interests.
Some countries proclaim Euroscepticism, but none of them has tried to leave the EU, Djelic underscored, announcing that EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule will visit Belgrade on 24 November to deliver the Questionnaire to the Serbian government, through which the necessary reforms will be implemented.
The questions will be exhaustive, aimed at presenting a real image of the functioning of the state, Djelic stressed.
In the first quarter of 2011 Serbia will compose replies to these questions, and in the second quarter the EU will pose additional questions.
Djelic highlighted that by adopting a joint resolution on Kosovo-Metohija with the EU, at the UN General Assembly, Serbia showed that it wants to work with its strategic partner, stressing that the resolution is of a status-neutral character.
He also noted that EU questions pertaining to Kosovo-Metohija and Serbia will be answered in line with the Serbian Constitution, which states that Kosovo- Metohija is a part of Serbia, and also in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
As for cooperation with the Hague tribunal, Djelic explained that the remaining two indictees, Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, are to be arrested, stressing that the EU is convinced that Serbia is doing all it can to conclude cooperation with the tribunal.
