Crime in Belgrade reduced by 3.7%

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that Belgrade is a safe city, especially for foreigners because only 1% of them encountered any sort of problem.

Presenting a report on security in Belgrade, Dacic underlined that the level of security in Belgrade is high.

According to the report for the period from October last year to October this year, more than 33% of the total crime in Serbia occurred in the capital.

In the first nine months of 2010, the total recorded crime in Belgrade was reduced by 3.7%, specified Dacic.

He recalled that in October three events required the engagement of a large number of police officers, namely 5,600 police officers for the Pride Parade, 4,000 during US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to Belgrade and 4,300 for the Red Star – Partizan football derby.

The First Deputy Prime Minister observed that during the Parade Parade 204 persons were injured, 173 police officers and 31 citizens, while 77 vehicles were damaged, of which 42 were police vehicles.

The police arrested 259 people, of whom 132 were detained in custody, Dacic confirmed, adding that the police prevented major incidences by intervening at different locations in the city.

Also, Dacic illustrated that during the matches in the first nine months of this year 55 people were injured, 51 of whom were supporters, while there were 174 attacks on police officers.

Dacic outlined that last year the police utilised 9.5% of assets from the Serbian budget, and this year the figure is at 5.5%.

The average salary of employees in the Ministry is between RSD 35,000 and RSD 37,000, he stated.

He affirmed that the City of Belgrade has donated RSD 200 million to the Belgrade Police Department for the procurement of 40 service vehicles.

By municipalities, the highest level of crime was recorded in the municipality of New Belgrade – 17%, 11.3% in Palilula, in Zvezdara 8.9%, 8.5% in Cukarica and in Vozdovac 8.3%, he proclaimed.

He noted that in the first nine months of 2010 Belgrade police seized 159 kilograms of drugs, mostly marijuana and heroin.

Only in October police seized 120 kilograms of heroin, which is the largest drugs seizure in the history of the Belgrade police, Dacic concluded.

Our region is very interesting because of the security roads of heroin and cocaine from South America, Afghanistan and Pakistan, which go through Serbia, Dacic remarked.

It was thanks to the Serbian security structures that five tonnes of cocaine around the world in two years were seized, the Minister maintained.

The First Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that more than 356,000 foreigners came to Belgrade in the first nine months of 2010, and specified that there were around 300 crimes, mostly thefts – 72%, committed against foreign denizens.

The number of stolen vehicles was reduced by 22%, while eight kidnappings were successfully solved, and there has been a smaller number of murders, rapes and juvenile delinquency, he highlighted.

Dacic stressed that in this period the police discovered and confiscated 1,543 firearms, 16 bombs, 13,800 kilograms of ammunition, two mines and 13.5 kilograms of explosives.
