Use of cutting-edge IT important for state, citizens

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that in the upcoming period Serbia must catch up with countries that use cutting-edge IT to facilitate the work of state bodies and make the life of citizens easier.

Dacic, opening the third IBM Forum, announced that the issuance of new car registration plates and traffic and driver's licences with chip technology will start in January next year.
This will allow the extension of registration without having to come to a police station, Dacic confirmed.
He specified that so far 2.7 million citizens have taken biometric passports, of whom 1.4 million have taken the second generation of biometric passports with fingerprints.
The second generation of passports will allow citizens at border crossings to pass through electronic gates without border police controls, explained Dacic and announced that the first such passage is to be introduced at Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport in about a month.
The First Deputy Prime Minister recalled that the police have so far released 2.5 million ID cards of which 70% have the new chip technology.
He outlined that the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society has established a network enabling contact with the Business Registers Agency and Post.
Dacic highlighted that the police are obliged to cover the whole of Corridor 10 with cameras in the next five years.
Cameras will record motorists’ speeding, and it is also necessary to set up an optical network for traffic management on the Corridor, he declared.
Dacic affirmed that cooperation with local governments is also planned together with the introduction of a system for monitoring traffic in major cities and camera surveillance in schools.
