Serbia’s EU candidacy application forwarded to European Commission

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic voiced his pleasure today at the fact that the EU Council has decided to forward Serbia’s application for EU candidacy to the European Commission for contemplation and underlined that this opens a new era in Serbia’s European integration.

Djelic told the press in Luxembourg that the European Commission will decide about the candidacy in the second half of 2011, stressing that Serbia’s goal is not simply to be granted EU candidate status, but also the opportunity to start direct talks on EU accession once it becomes a candidate country.
For this we will need to prove that we have realised full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and to implement important reforms in ten crucial points, Djelic said.
However, Serbia should implement these reforms anyway because they are relevant not only as conditions for EU membership, but for a better life for its citizens.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed special satisfaction with the fact that the decision was made unanimously.
He underlined that Serbia is doing everything in its power to fulfil the criterion that is important to the Netherlands and other countries, this being the completion of cooperation with the ICTY.
He also expressed satisfaction with the fact that the conclusions from the meeting contain a formulation that is good for Serbia which clearly says that the process of Serbia’s European integration cannot be held back until the European Commission gives its opinion and until this process is returned to the political level, which can be expected to happen in December next year.
The foreign ministers of EU member states decided today at a meeting in Luxembourg to forward Serbia’s candidacy application to the European Commission.
The commission’s positive opinion is a precondition for the beginning of negotiations on Serbia’s EU membership.
