High possibility of forwarding Serbia’s EU candidacy

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic stated that there is a high possibility at today’s meeting in Luxembourg that the EU Council will decide to forward Serbia’s application for EU candidacy to the European Commission.
Djelic, who is heading a Serbian delegation to Luxembourg, said in a statement to the BBC that Belgium, which currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, included Serbia’s candidacy in the meeting’s agenda, noting that it may be approached as a technical or as a political issue.
If it is regarded as a technical matter, it will be possible to vote on it with a qualified majority, and if it is posed as a political issue, there will have to be a consensus over it, Djelic explained.
It is in Serbia’s interest that a consensus is reached regarding its candidacy. If this the case, the Netherlands will most likely ask for certain paragraphs and elements of the declaration of the EU Foreign Affairs Council to be adopted, thus conditioning every step Serbia makes towards EU integration with full cooperation with the Hague tribunal, Djelic noted.
