Furthering police cooperation in South-eastern Europe

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic stated that participants in the fourth ministerial meeting of countries signatories of the Convention on Police Cooperation in South-eastern Europe discussed the possibilities for further improvement of police cooperation and the formation of joint investigation teams.

Dacic underlined that the meeting looked at several important issues, including further improvement of police cooperation, especially regarding the protection of data and the formation of joint investigation teams.
Signatories of the Convention are the former Yugoslav republics and Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova. The Convention was one of the first legal foundations for police cooperation between southeast European countries.
Ministerial meetings are held every six months, the Republic of Macedonia is currently the chair, and the next is Moldova, the Minister of the Interior said.
He affirmed that the convention was signed with the support of the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, and the realisation of the agreement with the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) is underway.
Today’s meeting at Brdo pri Kranju was also attended by Europol Director Robert Wainwright, which is of great strategic importance bearing in mind that all these countries are committed to joining the EU, Dacic noted.
The meeting was held as part of the two-day 10th regional ministerial conference on illegal migration, organised crime, corruption and terrorism.
