Higher energy efficiency to increase country’s competitiveness

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said today that the introduction of cleaner production and the increase of energy efficiency will enable higher competitiveness of the country and sustainable industrial development.

Djelic explained at the event “Introducing cleaner production and boosting energy efficiency” that the application of cleaner production, together with development of contemporary technologies and rational use of energy and raw materials, is necessary in order to achieve the goals set in the reduction of emission of greenhouse gases, boost energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the idea is to increase industrial investment, but in such a way that it fulfils ecological norms. He added that on average, Serbia consumes three times more energy per unit of production in relation to developed countries and six times more than the 15 original EU members.

He underlined that industry produces a large quantity of waste, more specifically 138 kilograms per $1,000 of GDP, which is many times more than in developed countries.

Djelic announced that a law on the rational use of energy will be adopted soon, pointing out that energy efficiency is one of the seven national priorities for the next five years in the field of science and technology.

Talking about the social aspect of sustainable development, the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that the budget review will allow for setting aside RSD 1 billion for the poorest municipalities in Serbia.

The event was attended by representatives of Serbian ministries, 80 local self-governments, state institutions and scientific centres, more than 50 companies, as well as representatives of companies specialising in recycling. The aim of the event is presentation of a strategic concept of sustainable development which implies less pressure on natural resources and an increase in measures to boost the competitiveness of the economy as a necessary precondition for sustainable economic development.
