Police showed professionalism, responsibility

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic visited the headquarters of the Police Directorate last night, from which yesterday’s operations were coordinated.
Dacic met with chiefs and commanding officers from all units engaged in maintaining public law and order on the streets of Belgrade and addressed officers who were deployed on the streets during yesterday’s Pride Parade.
“I would like to congratulate all police officers and units on successfully performing one of the hardest duties. You demonstrated a high level of preparedness by reacting in a professional manner to the violence on the streets.
We are certain that, regardless of whether a majority of police officers has a positive or a negative stance towards what has happened today, you exhibited a high level of responsibility and showed that the police are ready to react at any given moment.
The operation lasted for seven hours but the police reacted only when one of their colleagues were threatened with their lives. Over 120 policemen were injured. I would like to thank all of you and express my sincere wish that this should never happen again”, Dacic stated.
In yesterday’s riots in downtown Belgrade 147 police officers and 22 citizens were injured, 249 persons were arrested and 131 remained in custody.
