Serbia gives big contribution to Danube strategy

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said today at the 3rd Danube Conference in Brussels themed “Future of the Danube Area” that Serbia has given a big contribution to the preparation of the Danube strategy.
Djelic outlined that the most important projects Serbia has prepared for the Danube strategy are the renovation of the Danube-Tisza-Danube system, purification of wastewater in Belgrade and other cities, as well as tourism development projects.
“The Road of Roman Emperors” and the knowledge economy are also important in view of the fact that the two most significant Serbian universities are in Belgrade and Novi Sad, Djelic explained.
It is very likely that this macroeconomic development strategy project for the Danube-basin countries, including Serbia, will be granted ample budgetary funds from the EU, which has been affirmed by European commissioners at this conference, the Deputy Prime Minister asserted.
Serbia also presented a rather peculiar project, which is the candidacy of Radio Television Vojvodina for media partner of all countries that are included in the Danube strategy. The candidacy is due to the fact that Radio Television Vojvodina has programmes in all ten languages of the Danube-basin countries.
Djelic specified that the European Commission will make a draft of the Danube strategy in December which the EU should adopt by June next year.
At the same time, efforts are being made to include the strategy into the EU budget from 2014 to 2020, and this is why it is important that all Danube-basin countries apply for EU funds with projects from the fields of transport, tourism, river clearance, construction of ports, terminals and environmental protection systems, he concluded.
