Regional cooperation needed to fend off natural disasters

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic attended the 12th ministerial session of the European and Mediterranean Major Hazards Agreement (EUR-OPA) today, which focused on “Facing the Increased Number of Disasters and Improving Prevention and Response in the Context of Climate Change.”
Opening the first session themed “Old and New Challenges in Disaster Prevention and Response: Mobilising Societies for a Safer Future”, Dacic thanked Russia and its Ministry of Emergency Situations for organising this important gathering in the EUR-OPA calendar, aimed at reducing the risk of disasters, protecting the lives of citizens, cultural and material assets and ensuring general safety.
Several years ago Serbia signed this agreement and is now taking part as a full member for the first time, and no longer as an observer, Dacic noted.
He underlined that the consequences of large-scale natural disasters are very grave and this is why this event is focusing on exchange of experience so that such consequences, primarily to citizens, could be averted.
The Minister familiarised his colleagues with a joint idea between the Serbian Ministry of the Interior and the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations on setting up a single regional centre that would be open to all countries wishing to take part in this, because no country is big enough to have sufficient capacity to fight these problems alone.
This is a very important conference when taking into account that an action plan on cooperation in this field is about to be adopted for the period 2011–2015, as well as a number of political documents, with their main aim being preventing the grave consequences of natural hazards to the highest degree possible, Dacic concluded.
