Serbia to become member of European Patent Organisation soon

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic pointed out today in Geneva that intellectual property is important for economic development and that it is one of the drivers of an innovative and competitive knowledge-based economy.

Taking part in the 48th session of the European Patent Organisation (EPO) Assembly, Djelic said that Serbia has made the necessary steps over the last ten years to promote intellectual property rights.

He added that incentives for creating new patents are given within the new cycle of research projects. Serbia will become the 38th member of EPO in October this year, Djelic announced.

Upon the plenary session, Djelic met with Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation Francis Gurry to discuss strengthening cooperation and support to the Serbian Institute for the Protection of Intellectual Property, as well as new projects regarding the support to innovation.

Gurry will arrive on an official visit to Serbia in October this year, when a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed.

Djelic met in Geneva with delegations of Belarus, Egypt, Greece, China, Turkey and South Korea with whom he discussed improving cooperation in the field of science and technology and bilateral projects that are being implemented.
