UNDP important partner of Interior Ministry in fight against corruption

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic thanked UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia William Infante on UNDP’s assistance provided to the Ministry of the Interior in the fight against crime and terrorism.

Dacic supported activities and the development of new projects in collaboration with UNDP aimed at strengthening the position of the Ministry’s Department for Emergency Situations.

The Ministry of the Interior has taken over from UNDP a number of activities related to light weapons control.

Under a decision of the Council of Ministers, the EU supported the continued cooperation between UNDP and the South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC), based on which it was agreed that Serbia should destroy 28,000 pieces of weapons in 2010.

Dacic added that the Ministry is working on a new law on arms and ammunition.

The Ministry is also taking care of gender equality and active participation of women in the police, the Minister said and expressed gratitude for the contribution that the UN provided in capacity building in this area.

The Ministry has an excellent cooperation with local institutions as well as with some EU institutions in the fight against corruption, said Dacic.

He pointed out that the police identified UNDP as an important partner in the fight against corruption and is ready in the future development of new projects in this area.

Infante commended all forms of cooperation between UNDP and the Serbian Interior Ministry.

He said that the UNDP will be a partner in every project which lacks financial, logistical, technical or other assistance, and expressed hope that cooperation will continue in the future.
