Efficient border control with simple procedures precondition for EU membership

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that one of the preconditions for Serbia’s EU membership is a greater number of members of border police.

Dacic said at the celebration of the Day of border police at the Morovic border police station that the tasks of border police are to enable quick passage through the state border and to prevent various criminal acts – smuggling of drugs and stolen vehicles and transfer of criminals.
He underlined that the border surveillance should be improved as much as possible because this will enable a more efficient transport of goods and transfer of people, and prevention of all kinds of criminal activities, from illegal transfers to human trafficking.
The First Deputy Prime Minister said that in the last eight months, 33 million passengers passed through Serbia, mostly at border crossings Batrovci, Horgos, Presevo and Gradina, and at Nikola Tesla airport in Belgrade.
Dacic recalled that member of Zemun Clan Milos Simovic was arrested near the Morovic border police station while trying to illegally enter Serbia from Croatia.
He announced that an automatic gateway for passengers will be opened at Nikola Tesla airport in Belgrade, through which holders of biometric passports will be allowed to enter or leave the country without the presence of border police.
For the occasion of 17 September, the Day of border police, the Minister made an extraordinary promotion of 11 police officers and gave pecuniary awards to 63 of them.
The observation of the Day of border police was also attended by Police Chief Milorad Veljovic, representatives of international organisations, as well as chiefs of border police units of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia.
