Serbia to get EU candidate status by end-2011

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic said today that Serbia could get EU candidate status by the end of 2011 whereas the date for starting negotiations on joining the EU should be mid-2012.

Djelic told today's edition of the daily Blic that yesterday's meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels is a big step forward for Serbia because it is clearly shows that there is a consensus in the EU about Serbia's candidacy for the EU.
He added that influential countries such as Germany and France have been reserved until now, but now gave Serbia clear support for candidacy.
This was not possible yesterday because Belgium and the Netherlands have not formed their governments yet. We expect technical problems to be overcome and that the EU Council of Ministers in Luxembourg will make this decision in October, confirmed Djelic.
Serbia is ready for the next step, which is responding to the questionnaire of the European Commission which will soon be forwarded to us, Djelic outlined.
I am meeting with EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule on 16 September in Brussels and I will present him with Serbia’s expectations that the questionnaire should be sent to us as soon as possible, affirmed the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration.
