International cooperation indispensable for Serbia’s scientific development

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic announced today that the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and its Serbian partner the SANU Mathematical Institute will sign an agreement on extending their cooperation.

At the opening of the second international conference "Geometry, Dynamics, Integrable Systems - GDIS 2010" at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU), Djelic said that the relevant Ministry will endorse this idea, adding that agreement has been reached with the director of the Steklov Institute.

He stressed that the GDIS 2010 conference, scheduled to last until 13 September, is one of the largest such gatherings on mathematics in the world.

The Deputy Prime Minister announced that during the upcoming visit of President Boris Tadic to Russia an interstate agreement concerning mathematics will be signed, enabling considerable advancement of cooperation between Serbia and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Mathematics is the basis of all sciences and Serbia is very fortunate to have an outstanding generation of young mathematicians who achieved tenth place in the world at the recently held Olympics, Djelic highlighted.

SANU President Nikola Hajdin greeted the participants in the conference saying that the world cannot develop any further without applying the latest technologies and that international cooperation is indispensable for Serbian science.

The conference has gathered 60 participants from over 20 countries and ten academicians, including Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valery Kozlov. It was organised by the SANU Mathematical Institute and the Steklov Mathematical Institute, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technological Development.

As part of the conference, an exhibition was opened on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the German National Laboratory DESY and ten years of collaboration between the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences and this laboratory.

The exhibition was organised by the Vinca Nuclear Institute and the German embassy in Serbia and it featured 25 posters illustrating the scientific cooperation and joint research programmes between the two national laboratories.
