In an interview for today's edition of daily newspaper Politika, Djelic highlighted that a small number of very influential EU member states have decided to use our candidacy application as a kind of a means to impose pressure on Serbia ahead and during the debate on Kosovo-Metohija at the UN General Assembly.
He outlined that some countries started connecting the process of European integration to a resolution of the Kosovo issue, noting that such a policy is wrong, because it may slow down the process of European integration and destabilisation of the region as a whole, not only of Serbia.
Serbia's stand remains unchanged and we will never recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo and we shall never give up the idea of joining the EU, he maintained.
There was no consensus within the EU on the status of Kosovo, he confirmed adding that five EU member states do not intend to recognise the province not even after various pressures.
Although it will be hard to secure a majority for Serbia's resolution in the UN General Assembly, Serbia will fight for its adoption, Djelic declared noting that the resolution defends Serbia’s legitimate rights in a peaceful way.
Serbia must have long-term support from big world powers, the EU above all, for its accelerated development and a better future for its citizens, he stated.
The proposed resolution shows a high degree of understanding for the real situation on the ground, but also defends the basic principles of international law, one of the most important being that unilateral acts of secession cannot be acceptable for UN member states, he concluded.
