Speaking at a press conference held for the occasion of International Youth Day and International Year of Youth which will last until 12 August 2011, the Minister said that with these funds, the largest number of projects will be implemented in Central Serbia (28), the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina (21) and Belgrade (13).
In association with 25 civil society organisations, the Ministry has announced a competition today for a volunteer youth action which is part of the campaign “Youth are the Best”. This action calls on all young people to get involved into the process of preparation of a youth law.
The Minister outlined that the young in Serbia will celebrate International Youth Day in different ways, with the young in Varvarin playing games without borders and the young in Nis releasing balloons with their wishes written on them.
Samardzic-Markovic underlined that the young are not a problem of society, but its treasure and potential and announced that Serbia will get a first version of the youth bill by the end of the year.
She confirmed that an office for youth has been opened in two thirds of municipalities in Serbia, that more than 700,000 youths have participated in various programmes since 2007 and that the Fund for Young Talent gave 4, 048 awards and scholarships to the best students.
Resident Representative of UNDP Office in Serbia William Infante pointed to the importance of celebration of International Youth Day and International Year of Youth the theme of which is “Dialogue and Mutual Understanding”. It deals with ethnic dialogue and support to the young.
Infante disclosed that the UN supports creation of opportunities for the young and added that there are several programmes for the young such as “Alliance of Civilisations” and “Programme for the Environment” which aim to encourage cooperation and linking of the young.
International Youth Day has been observed in Serbia since 2007 when the Ministry of Youth and Sport was established. This holiday was introduced by the UN General Assembly in 2000.
