Evold Ziba and Tomica Milosavljevic
Speaking at a press conference, following a meeting with a delegation of the German Ministry of Health, Milosavljevic stated that the number of organ transplantations in Serbia has been on the increase, which means that during the last two years the Ministry of Health has succeeded in raising citizens’ awareness about the importance of donating organs of their closest family members even in a moment of their deepest grief, because that means extending someone else’s life.
Two years ago we carried out ten transplantations of organs from deceased persons, in 2009 there were 24 such procedures and in the first half of 2010 as many as 26, the Minister outlined.
He stressed that cooperation with the German health system will also include cooperation regarding administering anaesthesia to children, in which the University Children’s Clinic from Belgrade will participate.
We can expect the first results early next year, once an education centre is formed, he added.
German State Secretary of Health Evold Ziba declared that Germany is ready to endorse Serbia’s application to the Eurotransplant Foundation.
The Serbian health system is fully capable and can meet the high requirements set before new members of this organisation, Ziba highlighted.
President of the Eurotransplant International Foundation Bruno Meiser noted that Serbia has achieved good results and managed to increase the number of organ donors.
In order to further raise awareness in citizens we must have health ministers and doctors who are active and motivated for this task, Meiser explained, adding that Serbia has also made progress in laboratories dealing with tissue analysis in Belgrade and Novi Sad.
We expect these laboratories to receive European accreditations within the next 12 months, which will enable them to implement European standards in their work, Meiser concluded.
