Negotiations on draft Danube Strategy to be held in Brussels

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic stated today that Serbia will hold official negotiations concerning the Danube Strategy with the European Commission on 22 July in Brussels.
Speaking about the EU Strategy for the Danube Region at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, Djelic recalled that last week Serbia received the first draft of the Strategy and its contents include many of the strategic guidelines and projects adopted by Serbia concerning the matter.
The Strategy is expected to be adopted in the first half of 2011, during Hungary’s EU presidency, noted Djelic.
Serbia plans to organise three events. The first of these will be held on 8 July, when a group of young leaders from 10 Danube region countries will visit Sremski Karlovci, he announced.
On 27 September, Serbia will host a meeting that will be dedicated to discussions on the financing of projects under the Danube strategy, while on 14 and 15 October, representatives of the parliaments of Serbia and Vojvodina will visit parliaments of the Danube region countries.
The Danube strategy has three pillars – infrastructure, social and economic development and ecology, Djelic explained and noted that it is very positive that Serbia has received €17 million in aid from the EU for the system of navigation on the Danube and that three bridges are being built on the river – one near Beska, the Zezeljev bridge in Novi Sad and the Zemun-Borca bridge.
Another tranche of €18.5 million of aid from Europe has been secured for 2011 for realisation of certain projects on the Danube. Serbia’s projects that are ready for financing are the Golubac Fortress and development of local infrastructure near Veliko Gradiste, so that Srebrno jezero lake could be turned into a tourist resort, the Deputy Prime Minister said.
The Strategy is expected to be adopted in the first half of 2011, during Hungary’s EU presidency, noted Djelic.
