Local authorities called on to apply for projects financed from IPA

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic has called on all local governments to apply for projects financed from IPA funds.

Djelic said that the EU in the future will provide greater support for Serbia at a local level.
He underlined that successful realisation of projects that are currently running will be an argument to seek additional funds for these authorities.
The Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that at present local governments use the funds from the pre-accession funds insufficiently, and added that there are few projects that are funded from these sources.
He emphasised that €18.5 million will be allocated from IPA funds for 2011.
Since 2007, during the first half of the implementation of a seven year financial agreement, the EU has provided €135 million to Serbia for projects at a local level, Djelic highlighted.
The government’s top achievements during the first two years of its term in office have been visa liberalisation and the ratification of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA), he stressed.
It will be recalled that the SAA has been ratified by Spain and Malta so far, Djelic stated, adding that he hopes that other EU countries will also ratify the agreement this summer.
The main objective in the near future will be the further improvement of the standard of living. Earlier results achieved in this regard could have been better but the global economic crisis hampered government efforts, observed Djelic.
President of the Permanent Conference of Cities and Municipalities Djordje Stancic announced that in the future, with the help of the Serbian government and in consultation with the EU, the Conference will work on capacity building in local self-government bodies. He mentioned the implementation of a project for including EU officials in five municipalities in Serbia as an example of such efforts.
It is necessary to raise awareness among the general public and local authorities regarding obligations and changes which EU membership entails, noted Stancic.
