€20m from IPA funds for Danube-related projects

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic said today that nearly €20 million has been secured from the EU’s IPA funds and that all Danube municipalities in Serbia that have prepared projects related to the protection of the river can apply.
At the meeting organised by the Nautus Association and the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS), Djelic highlighted that the Danube can be crucial for the development of the country and that the Danube strategy can help Serbia prepare projects in three areas.
He outlined that the first area is ecology and added that Belgrade is now depositing all its wastewater into the Danube. To tackle this problem, approximately €600 million should be allocated.
The second area is socio-economic development as the Danube runs through both developed and underdeveloped municipalities, declared Djelic.
The third area refers to the construction of bridges, such as the Beska bridge, the Zezelj bridge in Novi Sad and the Zemun-Borca bridge.
The Deputy Prime Minister observed that the Danube development strategy which began last year is expected to be completed in mid-2011in Serbia as well as in other Danubian countries.
The EU will present a draft strategy on 2 July and all countries involved in its creation will hold a meeting on 22 July in Brussels.
Djelic announced that on 27 September Belgrade will host a conference on financing the Danube strategy, noting that this will be a great success for Serbia considering the fact that our country is not an EU member.
