Danube strategy can be instrumental in overcoming economic crisis

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic stated today at the 15th Europa-Forum that the EU Strategy for the Danube Region can be instrumental in overcoming the economic crisis.
Speaking at the two day Forum at Gottweig Abbey near Vienna, Djelic expressed satisfaction with the fact that Serbia, which is not a member of the EU, will host a conference on financing the Danube strategy at the end of September.
Djelic suggested that as many projects as possible showing the Danube as a river uniting and connecting Europe should be presented by countries in the Danube region.
Serbia has an important role to play in the Danube Basin, as 588 kilometres of the Danube River or nearly 25% of its navigable length flows through the country, observed Djelic.
We have opportunities for joint projects and ecology is an important aspect in this regard, he noted, adding that unfortunately the current situation is that all of Belgrade’s wastewater flows into the Danube.
A total of €600 million is required for building wastewater treatment plants, he stressed.
The Europa-Forum concluded today with the signing of a declaration on the Danube strategy.
