Bradic outlined that the grant was allocated as part of the project “Strengthening dialogue between Serbia’s civil society organisations and the EU” and “Support to the media in the field of European integration”.
He specified that €3.5 million was allocated to 32 civil society organisations and €1.8 million to 24 media houses.
The Minister explained that the aim of the project is to boost the capacity of local, regional and national media for professional reporting and information for citizens on all aspects of EU integration.
These funds are expected to improve the offer of quality media content which is not always profitable, but is beneficial to society.
Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert pointed out that the media and civil society have a key role in the democratisation and creation of civil society. He specified that out of approximately 67% citizens of Serbia who support EU accession, only 3% believe they are well informed on the process.
Degert emphasised that it was difficult to choose 57 projects out of more than 300 that applied for the grants.
Serbia has already made significant steps towards EU accession, such as the beginning of the process of ratification of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, application for EU candidacy and liberalisation of the visa regime, the head of the EU Delegation concluded.
