Creating conditions for young experts to remain in Serbia

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said today that Serbia must regulate the fields of science and technology better so that young and talented people would choose to continue their careers in their home country.
Speaking at a press conference at which results from a survey conducted at a meeting “Scientific community for the future of Serbia” were presented, Djelic announced that the results show that almost 21% of scientists from Serbia plan to leave the country and most of them are young people. 75% do not want to do that, and four percent are undecided.
In the survey, the scientists cited poor living conditions, the housing situation and low salaries as the main reasons for leaving the country. Other reasons are poor working conditions and lack of means and equipment. The Deputy Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the fact that most of the scientists want to continue their career in Serbia, but it is disturbing that the younger ones, up to 35 years of age, make up 40% of those who want to leave the country.
According to the survey, 85% of the members of the scientific community in Serbia believe that international cooperation should be continued with EU countries, while one-third see Russia, China and the US as partners in scientific cooperation. Djelic noted that the survey showed that two-thirds of them are satisfied with the work of the proper ministry, with the Strategy of scientific and technological development of Serbia and the public invitation for projects of basic research studies and technological development. Djelic recalled that the Ministry of Science conducted this survey on a sample of 765 respondents at the gathering “Scientific community for the future of Serbia” which was held on 23 May.
