Speaking at the basic police training centre in Sremska Kamenica, Dacic said that part of the duties of the police force will be taken over by other bodies, including the community police service, which will be a part of the country’s internal security system.
Besides the community police service, we will also develop other departments responsible for internal security which will help reduce the workload of the police, he announced.
Markovic recalled that the idea of forming new police services was initiated in 2007 and was formalised by the Law on public administration and local self-government and the Law on community police.
Duties of the community police will be wide-ranging and the most important one will be helping city authorities, concerning child safety, prevention of illegal building works and other similar duties, outlined Markovic.
There will be one community police person per 5,000 citizens. All candidates who have applied to date will complete their training by the end of this year, he specified.
The community police will be supervised by the ordinary police force. The first batch of community police service trainees consisting of 78 applicants from six cities started its 70 day training course on May 10 in Sremska Kamenica, he stated.
The training of the next batch of community police persons will begin on 28 June at a training centre in Kula. Trainees will come from Belgrade, Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Sremska Mitrovica, Nis and Leskovac, he concluded.
