Speaking at the Conference on Conditions and Expectations on the Serbian Agricultural and Food Products Market, Milovanovic said that the inventory will include all entities and resources in the agricultural and food production sector.
It will be part of an overall global agricultural inventory, and will provide a complete overview of Serbia’s agricultural and food production resources, as well as other areas related to the rural economy, he explained.
Field staff will gather data on resources, producers, farms, agricultural land and its structure and livestock, Milovanovic outlined.
Two years ago the Ministry established cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture. This cooperation is still going on and has resulted in technical and other help for Serbia, recalled Milovanovic.
The United States Department of Justice has been financing training for the Ministry and the Statistical Office for the last two years. It has also provided analytic support for preparing the inventory, he noted.
State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Milan Petrovic highlighted that Serbia’s agriculture sector has made it through the worst period of the economic crisis.
Production prices went up and demand went down as buying power fell. As a result it has become harder to market products, he remarked.
In 2009, agricultural exports stood at $2 billion and the surplus was somewhere from $600 million to $700 million, Petrovic specified.
With the resources and knowledge that Serbia has, it can produce much better results. Serbian farmers must prepare for the larger EU market as tough competition awaits them there, he emphasised.
US Ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick stressed that the Conference has been organised as part of the technical support being provided by the United States Department of Agriculture to Serbia, related to its EU integration process.
As a result of this cooperation, trained analysts work at the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, who are making a precise analysis of supply and demand of agricultural goods, which will also be of benefit to the private sector, she asserted.
