Serbia strategic partner for Uruguay

Belgrade/Montevideo, 11 June 2010

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic met with Uruguayan Vice-President Danilo Astori today and expressed his gratitude to Uruguay for its principled stance and support for Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Dacic also said that he hopes that cooperation between Uruguay and Serbia will be intensified in the future, recalling that this was the first meeting between functionaries of the two friendly countries after a long period of time.

Dacic invited the Uruguayan Vice-President to visit Serbia.

Astori, who welcomed Dacic with highest honours, pointed out that Uruguay wants to enter the European market and that Serbia is a very important strategic partner for achieving this goal.

Serbia and Uruguay should work in order to reach agreements concerning police cooperation, the mutual removal of visa requirements and mutual legal assistance as well as several economic agreements which will strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries, outlined Astori.

Uruguay used to be one of the most developed Latin American countries. Last year, it began exiting a serious economic crisis which started in 2001.

Dacic also met with Uruguay’s Foreign Minister Luis Almagro, with whom he discussed the removal of visa requirements and Uruguay’s support for Serbia regarding the issue of Kosovo-Metohija.

The First Deputy Prime Minister will wrap up his six day visit to Latin American countries tomorrow with a meeting with Interior Minister Eduardo Bonomi.
