Cooperation with Brazil for combating transnational organised crime to be intensified

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic and Brazilian Justice Minister Luiz Paulo Barreto signed a memorandum of understanding today concerning the intensification of police cooperation in the fight against transnational organised crime.
Dacic, who is in Brazil at the start of his six day visit to Latin American countries, expressed gratitude to the country for its principled stance regarding the issue of Kosovo-Metohija and for not recognising the unilateral declaration of independence by the southern Serbian province, as well as for supporting Serbia’s arguments before the International Court of Justice concerning this matter.
He emphasised that the main purpose of his visit to Brazil was to sign the memorandum on police cooperation which will make it possible to organise police operations for combating cocaine trafficking.
Dacic also discussed the removal of mutual visa requirements with the Brazilian Justice Minister. He said that the removal of visas is now a matter of days away.
Barreto stated that Serbia is the only country in the Western Balkans and one of the few countries in Europe with which Brazil has signed a police cooperation agreement.
Dacic and Barreto agreed that quick exchange of information about criminal groups that have connections throughout the Balkans, Western Europe and Latin America is of great importance.
Dacic also met with representatives of Brazil’s Federal Police, including Director of the Combating Organised Crime Department Roberto Troncon, Executive Director Luiz Pontel, and General Coordinator for international crime Ricardo Pataro Botelho de Queiroz
Dacic said that talks focused on exchanging information and achieving an agreement on establishing a safe means of communication for exchange of operational data, joint monitoring, discovery, apprehension and trial of organised criminal groups.
He highlighted that the Brazilian minister of justice and representatives of the Federal Police showed willingness for cooperation and as a result concrete results of cooperation between the police of Serbia and Brazil can be expected soon.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding with Latin American countries will enable the Serbian police to intensify direct cooperation and exchange operational data in the fight against organised crime and the drug trade. Organised crime this year has been characterized by cocaine smuggling, which is why intensive measures were taken which resulted in the seizure of more than half a tonne of cocaine in the territory of Brazil. The actions were conducted in cooperation with international partners.
The development of economic and other forms of cooperation between the two countries was also discussed.
Dacic will continue his visit to Latin America with a trip to Argentina.
