Ciplic explained at a press conference that the election of a national council gives it political legitimacy to fully assume all competencies and responsibilities regarding the development, status and situation of a national minority, as prescribed by the Law on national councils.
The Minister said that these are the first elections held according to the new Law on national councils.
He specified that there will be 883 polling stations, 43 electoral commissions for specific areas and 2,700 committee board members, while 435,000 people will have the right to vote.
The elections for national councils will be held in 167 municipalities in Serbia.
According to the 2002 census, over one million people live in Serbia who declare themselves as members of a national minority, which is 14% of the total population.
Nineteen national minorities will choose their national councils, of which 16 will be through direct election, whereas Croats, Macedonians and Slovenians will choose their national councils through indirect election, i.e. through electoral commission.
