Dacic on six day visit to Latin American countries

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic will begin a six day visit to Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay on 7 June.

During his visit to Brazil, Dacic will meet with representatives of Brazil’s Federal Police, including Director of the Combating Organised Crime Department Roberto Troncon, Executive Director Luiz Pontel, and General Coordinator for international crime Ricardo Pataro Botelho de Queiroz.

Dacic will also talk with Brazilian Vice President José Alencar Gomes da Silva and Justice Minister Luiz Paulo Barreto. Dacic and Barreto will sign a memorandum of understanding between the Serbian and Brazilian interior ministries concerning the strengthening of police cooperation in the fight against trans-national organised crime.

During his visit to Argentina, Dacic will meet with his Argentine counterpart Aníbal Florencio Randazzo and Minister of Justice, Security and Human Rights Julio Alak. Dacic and Alak will sign a memorandum of understanding between the Serbian Interior Ministry and the Argentine Justice Ministry.

Dacic will address the Argentine Foreign Policy Council. He will speak about Serbia’s fight against international organised crime and drug trafficking.

On the last leg of his visit, Dacic will visit Montevideo, where he will meet with Uruguay’s Foreign Minister Luis Almagro, Interior Minister Eduardo Bonomi and Uruguayan Vice-President Danilo Astori.

Signing agreements with Latin American countries will make it possible for the Serbian police to intensify direct cooperation and exchange of information with the police forces of these countries regarding the fight against organised crime and drug trafficking.

Organised drug trafficking was dominated by cocaine smuggling this year because of which intensive measures were taken. These measures were also the result of the uncovering of a five member group which smuggled cocaine from South America into Serbia.

Three kilograms of cocaine, worth €500,000 was confiscated during the operation. Three arrests were made in Belgrade and during an operation to track down the group in Europe and Latin America lasting over several months a total of 274 kilograms of cocaine was confiscated.
