Serbia to give scholarships to women researchers

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said today that 45% of scientists in Serbia are women with this being one the highest percentages in Europe and the world.

After the signing of a Protocol on cooperation with representatives of the National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO and the company L’Oreal Balkans on launching a programme of national scholarships “For women in science”, Djelic remarked that the percentage of women scientists in other countries is between 10% and 20%.

With the signing of this document, a competition for doctoral and post-doctoral studies has been opened for young women who do research work in the field of natural sciences.

The Deputy Prime Minister called on all women scientists who are below 35 to apply for a €5,000 scholarship before 1 September.

Djelic added that with this project, Serbia has joined the 40 countries which already have a programme of scholarships for young women scientists.

He stressed that as many women as possible should apply because last year, Serbia had a young scientist, Ivana Pesic from Nis, who achieved great success at international level and is the first Serbian woman to be included among the world’s 15 most promising scientists.

The Protocol was signed with Director General of L’Oreal Balkans Brigitte Streller and Secretary-General of the National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO Jasna Zrnovic.

Streller underlined that a new elite of young female scientists will be formed thanks to this programme of stipends, noting that in the years to come they will be able to apply for prestigious international awards.

She emphasised that the goal of the project is to encourage young women in science to develop their careers and build their self-confidence.

Zrnovic added that the future of Serbia is in science, which is why it is necessary to engage companies here and abroad which can help realise projects such as this one.
