Dacic delivers two-millionth biometric passport

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic delivered the two-millionth biometric passport today to student Marina Simic (20) and announced measures that will reduce queues for obtaining new passports.

Dacic visited the premises of the New Belgrade police station, where 9 photo boxes have been installed which will be operational on working days and at weekends. He wished Marina Simic that her new passport be a ticket for nice events in the future and recalled that in the last two years, more passports have been issued in Serbia than in the previous ten years.
Since 7 July 2008, when the issuing of new passports started, over 2.1 million citizens have applied for new passports. The Ministry of the Interior receives between 6,500 and 7,200 applications every day, but is striving to increase its capacity to 8,500 applications per day.
The Minister said that the biggest queues are in Belgrade, which is why the Ministry addressed Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas to assist in allocating more office space and more clerks.
Dacic stated that as of autumn, the Ministry might start cooperation with the public postal company Posta Srbije for issuing documents and that a new system for booking time slots for applying for new passports via SMS will be tested.
There is also a possibility that the validity of old passports will be extended for Serbian citizens living abroad in order to reduce queues in diplomatic and consular offices abroad.
Dacic thanked the employees of the Ministry of the Interior who work on issuing new documents and noted that 1.8 million applications for new IDs have been made so far.
