Combating crime, corruption a state priority

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic reiterated today that the Serbian state is resolved to demonstrate that it is stronger than any crime and will not stop until the battle against crime, corruption and terrorism is over.

At the celebration of the Ministry of the Interior Day and Police Day, Dacic stressed that Serbia is committed to becoming a part of the European family of peoples, without crime and terrorist threats to their citizens.

Over the last 12 months, since the previous celebration of this day, five police officers have lost their lives. Every attack on the police is an attack on the state, Dacic said underlining that the state must respond severely to this.

He noted that the police must be modern, highly-educated, well-equipped and well-paid, emphasising that investment in the police is an investment in our future.

Serbian President Boris Tadic said that Serbia will persevere in the struggle against all forms of crime.

Serbia is a key stability factor in the region and the EU, the President said stressing that judicial institutions made an enormous effort to improve the struggle against organised crime, thus increasing Serbia’s image in the world as well.

He extended greetings over the Ministry of the Interior Day and Police Day to all police officers and their families, commending them on their fight against crime and the protection of citizens.

Earlier today the First Deputy Prime Minister laid a wreath at the memorial plaque on the Ministry building in Kneza Milosa Street, while Chief of Police Milorad Veljovic laid a wreath at the Cukur Cesma memorial fountain.

Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Minister of Justice Snezana Malovic, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic also attended the celebration in Makis, as well as police chiefs, representatives of the diplomatic crops and religious communities.

At the training centre in Makis the Security Administration held an exercise, while special units of the police and the Gendarmerie, as well as the PTJ, the SAJ and the Helicopter Unit performed a joint exercise.
