RSD 80 million for refugees

Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic handed over agreements to representatives of 20 municipalities and cities today, concerning the implementation of the “Assistance to the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) through support for local action plans” project.

Krkobabic said at the occasion that the project costs RSD 80 million and is being financed by the UNHCR and implemented by the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees.

The project will provide a lasting solution to residential and employment problems for 140 IDP and refugee families, he explained.

The funds are intended for purchasing 110 rural properties, 14 building materials packages and 14 monetary donations, he specified.

Within the framework of the project for supporting local efforts which the Commissariat for Refugees is implementing with the help of the UNHCR and European donors, more than 600 building materials packages and 330 financial help packages for starting small businesses have been distributed throughout 92 municipalities in Serbia to date, he said.

Despite the economic crisis and problems that were caused by natural disasters and floods in southern Serbia, RSD 130 million was set aside in this year’s state budget for the activities of the Commissariat for Refugees.

For the same purpose, €25 million was set aside from European funds, of which almost half has still not been used.

Krkobabic said that this year another €10 million should be set aside and around 10 collective centres closed down.

The presentation of contracts was attended by representatives of the EU Delegation in Serbia, UNHCR, OSCE, the US Embassy, the Commissariat for Refugees, and representatives of the institutions of the Republic of Serbia and the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.
