EU membership Serbia’s key goal

Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic said last night in Brussels that Serbia’s key goal is to become an EU member, adding that Belgrade hopes that after Chief Hague Prosecutor Serge Brammertz submits his report, EU members will have a sound basis on which to begin ratifying the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with Serbia.
Following a meeting with European Parliament Speaker Jerzy Buzek, Djelic stressed that the European Parliament will be an important partner to Serbia on its path to the EU, since the Lisbon Treaty gave the Parliament an important role in the EU integration process.
Serbia will be a stability factor in the region and its main objective is EU membership, the Deputy Prime Minister underscored.
Serbia is aware of the difficulties the EU is undergoing, but it can hope that the report of Chief Hague Prosecutor Serge Brammertz, to be submitted in June, will form a basis allowing EU members to start ratifying the SAA, Djelic said.
Belgrade hopes that by its activities it will help the EU Council of Ministers to request an “opinion” from the European Commission on Serbia’s readiness to be granted EU candidate status. Serbia is conducting well-calculated economic and monetary policies, thus contributing to stability in the region, he added.
European Parliament Speaker Jerzy Buzek stated that being a Western Balkan country, Serbia is important for the EU, adding that the European dream of Serbian citizens will come true after a period of committed efforts.
Buzek stressed that Serbia plays an important role in the region, adding that political, economic and judicial reforms in Serbia are going well. However, he noted that not everything has been fulfilled and achieved to date, but added that it can be done gradually in the near future.
He congratulated Serbia on fulfilling the conditions for visa abolishment, stressing the difficulty of the task for both sides.
Buzek stressed the importance of cooperation between Serbia and the EU regarding the strategy to develop the Danube area and transportation corridors. He said that during their talk they also discussed the fight against organised crime and processing of war crimes indictees.
The Parliament Speaker stressed that the relations with Serbia and other Western Balkans countries are important for the EU-27.
