Germany should be Serbia’s strong ally for its entrance into EU

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said that during his visit to Berlin he called on the Bundestag, associates of German Chancellor Angela Markel and representatives of the country’s administration to start ratification of the EU Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with Serbia in June.
Djelic told Fonet news agency that he also asked from Berlin, that if that is not possible in June, to give the green light to the European Commission several weeks later to start examining Serbia’s application for the EU.
He said that an agreement was reached on signing an interstate deal in the field of science. There are also plans to open branch offices of the Max Plank and Fraunhofer institutes in Serbia. Speaking about cooperation in the field of economy, the Deputy Prime Minister that it was agreed that the Serbian-German interstate commission should meet in late August in Berlin, three and a half years after its last meeting.
Pointing to the fact that it is very important for Serbia to make Germany its strong ally in the EU integration process and in the areas of economy and science, the Deputy Prime Minister said, that the acquisition of this support was the most valuable result of his visit.
It is clear that the German people are greatly concerned over events in Greece but it was stated in talks that the situation in Serbia, owing to the sacrifices of the Serbian people and a sound economic policy, is very different. Serbia’s debt is low, its banking system is stable and its budget deficit is within acceptable limits, stressed Djelic.
This should encourage us to continue on a similar path as this will ensure continued support from Germany and the EU, he said.
